The Student Herald Invite Mr. Stephen

For final-year students

The last year is when the choices you make cost the least.

Most students learn what they could have done in their final year only after graduation. Start with these.

Six things to settle before you graduate

1

Decide what “opportunity” means for you

A first job, a second degree, a new country, permanent residence — they are different plans with different clocks. Write yours down.

2

Take the language test while you are still in study mode

Scores expire, and the best score you can reach is worth more than any other single number on an application. Book early, prepare properly.

3

Have your credentials assessed

Where a route asks for an assessment of your education, it takes time. Starting in the final year means it is ready when you are.

4

Keep every document

Transcripts, degree certificates, reference letters and proof of any work. They are far easier to collect while the institution still knows you.

5

Check who is advising you

In Canada, only licensed representatives may give paid immigration advice, and the licence is public. Ask for the number and look it up before you pay anyone.

6

Compare before you commit

Weigh every destination and programme on total cost, time, rules and risk — not on the promise a recruiter makes.
